Principal Software Engineer

Our client is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join their Cyber business unit working on advanced cryptographic and key management solutions for defence customers. You'll need strong embedded or application software development experience, particularly in C and C++, along with a solid grounding in best practice software development lifecycles. Apply now!

Working Patterns and location – Fully on site

·        Architect, design, implement and test embedded and application software to meet project requirements.

·        Apply object-oriented design techniques to enable code reuse and testing framework integration.

·        Review system design artefacts and derive software requirements and architecture from them.

·        Design and maintain software models using tools such as RSA and Enterprise Architect.

·        Estimate effort for software activities and deliver to time and cost commitments.

·        Mentor and coach junior engineers, sharing knowledge and chairing technical reviews.

·        Contribute to technical bids and proposals, providing accurate effort and risk estimates.

·        Champion best practice development processes, including TDD, DevSecOps and secure coding standards.

·        Significant experience in embedded product development using bare-metal or RTOSes such as ThreadX, QNX or Linux.

·        Strong C and C++ development skills in embedded or application software contexts.

·        Experience with embedded Linux application, kernel or driver development.

·        Solid understanding of object-oriented design and patterns including SOLID principles.

·        Experience of software testing and design for test across the full development lifecycle.

·        Strong knowledge of best practice software development processes and lifecycles.

·        Ability to mentor junior engineers and lead technical reviews confidently.

·        Degree in engineering, mathematics, science or equivalent hands-on experience.

The client would also like to see some of the below, but this is not essential:

·        Experience with Rust, JavaScript, node.js or react.js development.

·        Knowledge of communications protocols such as TCP/IP.

·        Experience using version control, CI pipelines and automated test frameworks.

·        Familiarity with defensive coding standards such as MISRA.

·        Experience with DOORS, RSA, Enterprise Architect, UML or SysML.

·        Master's degree in an engineering, mathematical or science-based subject.
