Principal Safety Engineer

Our client are a multinational Aerospace and Defence technology company. They have a solid base in the UK and bring modern Software development approaches in the defence and security sector.

They are looking for a Principal Safety Engineer to support the delivery of various complex Safety Critical systems across a number of Sub-sea platforms.

This is a hybrid role, requiring 2 days per week on site.


Key responsibilities
  • Define safety requirements to align with customer safety targets
  • Aid in planning safety activities for complex projects
  • Support internal and external design reviews and safety committee meetings through audit participation.
  • Conduct analysis that positively influences engineering teams' design decisions and proposed solutions.
  • Line manage a small team of safety engineers and aid in the development of more junior engineers.
Skills & experience
  • Relevant experience in safety-related engineering environments.
  • Proficiency in international and defence standards, including IEC 61508 and Def Stan 00-056.
  • Familiarity with safety assurance for Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) PE-based systems and high-integrity software.
  • Experience in safety and reliability analysis techniques, such as hazard identification, FMECA, FTA, and Functional Failure Analysis.

The client would also like to see some of the below, but this is not essential:

  • Proficiency in capturing, negotiating, and managing safety requirements for Commercial and Military Maritime engineering.
  • Understanding of Human Factors Engineering.
  • Extensive experience in UK Defence projects related to maritime engineering.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the entire systems engineering lifecycle.
