PLC Control Systems Engineer

Introduction

Due to the nature of the role, my client will be looking for candidates to be based on-site in their South London office, as programming can’t be completed offsite.

My client is an industry leader in all aspects of IT, computer network operations, cyber security and defence and they are at the forefront of the challenge to find innovative solutions that can effectively defend networks and offer protection across the entire cyber and defence domain. They are currently transforming their defence and national security capabilities for the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the British Army and wider UK Government.

Within this role, you will be working within a team of likeminded, and skilful control systems software engineers to provide subject matter expertise both to your engineering peers as well as the programme management team. You will be encompassed within the project teams that are providing software design and development for a number of maritime control and instrumentation systems.

Key responsibilities
  • Capture, interpret and develop customer requirements
  • Produce technical documentation in accordance with company/customer procedures
  • Specify, design and test solutions for PLC control systems
  • Manage data communications with third party equipment
  • Develop PLC software from multiple design formats such as Block Diagrams, Flow Charts or Pseudo Code
  • Validate software designs through analysis and test
  • Support the preparation of contract changes and proposals
  • Be aware of and comply with company standards of conduct and all relevant statutory requirements
  • Carry out any other reasonable management request
  • Provide input to project meetings and team briefings
  • Undertake any other reasonable task as requested
Skills & experience
  • Design and integration of large scale PLC Control Systems, utilising tools such as:
    • Siemens S7-300/400 (Step 7 Professional Classic) or S7-1200/1500 (TIA Portal)
    • Rockwell CompactLogix/ControlLogix (RSLogix5000 and Studio5000 Logix Developer)
  • Proven experience in PLC control systems design and programming.
  • 3+ years in a PLC software engineering environment.
  • SCADA/PLC interfacing and driver configuration.
  • Fieldbus (Profinet/Profibus) communication protocols.
  • Production of technical documentation.
  • Degree, HND, HNC or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic engineering or a related discipline e.g. C&I engineering, Systems engineering.

The client would also like to see some of the below, but this is not essential:

  • Experience of Large Infrastructure PLC and SCADA development environments and solutions.
  • Safety Integrated Systems such as Schneider (Triconex) Tricon and Tristation.
  • Systems Engineering approach to software development.
  • Understanding of industry standards such as BS EN 61508, 61511 and 61131.
  • Understanding of Hazops and FMECAs activities.
  • Experience of configuration management systems and change control.
  • Software testing and verification.
  • Experience within Defence, Maritime (Ship’s machinery and control systems), Aerospace, or a similarly regulated industrial sector (e.g. Oil & Gas, Pharma or PetroChem).
