Our client is a prime contractor and major supplier to the U.K. Ministry of Defence and has developed strong capabilities in mission systems integration in defence, national security and commercial markets.  They also design, develop and manufacture a range of high-technology electronic systems and software at facilities in England, Scotland and Wales.

Our client is a technology company focused on Defence, Aerospace and Cyber & Intelligence with sites across the UK; in England, Scotland and Wales. A fully owned subsidiary of a company in the US, a listed technology company, they have been in the UK, in one form or another, for more than 100 years.

Key responsibilities
  • Take responsibility for the design and delivery of effective software solutions within projects.
  • Analyse business requirements
  • Lead in discussions with stakeholders over feasibility and validation of requirements and business cases
  • Lead in technical discussions with the development team over how to meet requirements
  • Lead projects within an engineering team
  • Specify, design, plan, implement and test stable, performant, scalable software solutions
  • Review and approve software design proposals
  • Supervise development and implementation of software solutions by the development team
  • Provide relevant formal and informal training to all team members throughout their career
  • Define and continuously improve the team’s strategy, technical processes, policies, standards & guidelines
  • Track risks to projects and operations, and actively address risks early to avoid future problems
  • Review code from the team and provide constructive feedback
  • Act as last line of technical support
  • Reports to business unit IT director
  • Cross report to project board
  • Development team members report to you
Skills & experience
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Strong understanding of object orientated systems
  • Experience with engineering complex web applications
  • Knowledge of the full software development lifecycle and industry bodies of knowledge and best-practice
  • Familiarity with developing secure web applications
  • Able to work under broad direction without direct supervision
  • Good communication skills

The client would also like to see some of the below, but this is not essential:

  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Learn new technologies and techniques and keep up to date with trends and developments in the industry
  • Familiarity with agile development techniques
  • Knowledge of modern object-orientated PHP “done the right way”
  • Knowledge of SQL (particularly PostgreSQL)
  • Knowledge of modern JavaScript modern web front-end technologies (eg. responsive design)
