Mechanical Engineering Manager

Introduction

Our client are a large consultancy who are working on exciting new projects within their Nuclear/Marine sector.

They are on the lookout for skilled Mechanical Design Engineers who have a strong design background and can provide technical leadership to the Mechanical Design team.

Ideally you would need experience with software such as Mathcad, AutoCAD, Autodesk or similar.

This is a remote role with occasional travel to Plymouth (1 or 2 days per month)

Key responsibilities
  • Managing the delivery of various mechanical engineering work packages.
  • Ensuring all aspects are managed such as scope, quality, schedule and to cost.
  • Managing technical elements, from identifying requirements through to handover.
  • Providing technical responses and giving clear and concise advice on design packages, essentially becoming the subject matter expert.
  • Liaising with the Project Manager to ensure the design covers scope, and to agreed standards.
  • Identifying key factors and leading the technical planning process.
  • Ensuring all documentation is updated appropriately.
  • Ensure that staff and contractors are familiar with the hazards and risks associated with the work undertaken by the delegated engineering team.
  • Producing fabrication drawings and check they are compliant to i.e BS8888 standards.
  • Provide expert advice to the other mechanical engineers and various disciplines to enable them to develop the design.
Skills & experience
  • A degree in an appropriate engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council or working towards Chartership.
  • Nuclear Introductory Course or equivalent nuclear and/or marine system knowledge preferred.
  • Alternatively, experience in other safety critical plant/process design would be considered.
  • Design of mechanical and nuclear process / plant systems e.g. fresh water, demineralised water, radioactive effluent processing etc.
  • Experience of the Functional Safety implications of process / plant design, and design of safety systems.
  • Experience of substantiation of process equipment for justification of Safety Functions (Nuclear preferred).
  • Experience in producing and checking a wide range of engineering reports and supporting more junior engineers in these activities.
  • Able to effectively communicate and represent the mechanical discipline in, multi-level, stakeholder reviews.
  • Able to produce and check plant Process Descriptions.
  • Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience.
  • Sound understanding of Company and departmental procedures relating to Design, Health and Safety and Quality requirements, and ability to manage projects in accordance with these procedures.
  • Experience of the design support to construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear submarines and/or facilities or Experience of the design and support of Hydrocarbon/Chemical process/plant systems.
  • Knowledge of seismic analysis.
  • Software: Mathcad, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor (or equivalent), MS Office.
