My client is an industry leader in all aspects of IT, computer network operations, cyber security and defence is at the forefront of the challenge to find innovative solutions that can effectively defend networks and offer protection across the entire cyber and defence domain. They are currently transforming the defence and national security capabilities for the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the British Army and wider UK Government.

My client is looking for an Electrical CAD Designer to create electrical designs, drawings and schematics for a Platform Management System that will be implemented onto Naval vessels and a variety of other marine related projects within the defence sector. You will be a key member of the Hardware Engineering team, working to increase and support on the current Design’s team capabilities that are delivering these defence maritime projects.

You will have the opportunity to work 2 to 3 days within my clients London office and have the ability to work remotely for the other days of the week. You will also need to hold an active SC or DV clearance for this position due to the nature of the work.

Key responsibilities
  • Produce and review electrical schematics in accordance with relevant standards and internal Computer Aided Design (CAD) processes, using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Develop and maintain component libraries to support electrical schematic activities.
  • Provide electrical engineering support to the Electrical Design Engineering team.
  • Understand and interpret PI&D control systems, where required.
  • Create, modify, maintain and manage electrical schematics for power and control systems.
  • Support Electrical Design Engineering team in component selection through analysis and justification.
  • Produce, modify, maintain and manage technical documents to support contractual deliverables (e.g., specifications, design documents, Bill of Materials (BOMs) etc.).
  • Manage and adhere to configuration management processes for baseline control throughout the full project lifecycle.
  • Manage and adhere to change control processes, providing input to impact assessments.
  • Collaboratively support other engineering and supporting functions from an electrical schematic perspective.
  • To be aware of and comply with company standards of conduct and all relevant statutory requirements.
Skills & experience
  • Strong experience in an Electrical Design Engineering position.
  • Proficient user of AutoCAD Electrical or similar (2+ years).
  • Knowledge of electrical systems design and analysis techniques.
  • Engineering Degree in related discipline (experienced Electrical Design Engineers without a degree will also be considered.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of electrical related Defence Standards, including Lloyds Register and other Military Standards (e.g., Def Stan 59-411).
  • Organised, adept at workload management and prioritising appropriately to meet deadlines.
  • Flexible and responsive to changing priorities.
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with all audiences/stakeholders.
  • Strong customer focus.
  • Proficient user of MS office and competent in PowerPoint (and face-to-face presentation delivery, where required).

The client would also like to see some of the below, but this is not essential:

  • Experience of working within a team developing Naval Platform Management Systems (PMS) for surface and sub-surface programmes.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of Defence programmes.
  • Experience in battery technology and management systems.
  • Experience in electrical power distribution design.
  • Experience in Defence Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standards (e.g., Def Stan 59-411).
  • Familiarity with electrical panel/enclosure/cabinet design.
