Linux Systems Administrator - Big Data

Big Data Systems Administrator to administer and maintain a mixed Linux and Windows estate comprised of physical and virtual hosts.

Our client is a large multi-disciplined ‘professional services’ engineering practice. The team is organised in key customer focused capabilities which each have sub-capability areas comprising single or multiple engineering delivery projects within the NS Sector. 

Key responsibilities
  • Administer and maintain a mixed Linux and Windows estate comprised of physical and virtual hosts.
  • Ensure key patches and upgrades to core infrastructure are applied in a timely manner.
  • Continuously update, develop and monitor platform monitoring tools to ensure uptime.
  • Build and configure new hardware to specific build standards.
  • Assist in application upgrades of platform components.


Skills & experience
  • Practicing Technical Engineering Professional.
  • Administering Linux operating systems.
  • Administering windows operating systems (Preferred).
  • Managing log sources and collection (Preferred).
  • Patching and maintenance of enterprise systems (Preferred).
  • Qualified to a degree level or with significant experience of technical delivery.


  • Creatively applying a wide range of technical and/management principles.
  • Performing highly complex work activities covering technical, financial and quality aspects.
  • The ability to influence the development of technical policy.
  • Linux operating systems skills (patching, support, development).
  • Log sources and collection skills (Logstash, Beats framework, Windows Event Forwarding, Syslog, Sysmon).
  • Elasticsearch (ELK) and Hadoop big data systems.
  • Cyber Monitoring tools (SIEMs).
  • Code automation tools (Puppet, Ansible).
  • Scripting skills (Bash, Python, Java).
  • Ability to contribute to the formulation of security strategy.
  • Ability to develop relationships with senior customers.
  • Member of a professional body as appropriate to area of specialism.
